Difference between Pure Sine Wave and Modified Sine Wave

A pure sine wave inverter is more complex than a modified sine wave inverter and as a result, is a more expensive item to purchase but more cost effective and much safer in the long run. Pure sine wave power flows in even, arching waves and is generally needed for newer LED TVs, CFL light bulbs, and inductive loads like brushless motors.

The function of Inverters is to convert stored direct current (DC) power in your batteries into alternating current (AC) power, like the kind you get in your home so that you can run your electrical appliances. However, there are two kinds of Inverters; There’s one kind that converts direct current to the pure sine wave and the other that converts power to the modified sine wave. As a non-technical person, all this might sound difficult, so we put together this guide to help you save time and some money in the long term.

#1. Pure Sine Wave

Clocks and audio equipment behave much better on a pure sine wave. These inverters use more sophisticated technology to protect even the most sensitive electronics. They produce power which equals – or is better than – the power in your home.

Appliances may be damaged or not function properly without pure smooth power. This safety is guaranteed by pure sine inverters. Use these inverters for televisions, laptops, digital microwaves, fridges, and other sensitive electronic equipment. Pure Sine inverters can power just about any AC appliance without risk of damage. A significant advantage of a pure sine wave inverter is that consumer electronics and electrical appliances sold on the market is designed for a pure sine wave.

This guarantees that equipment on a pure sine wave will work to its full specifications. Some appliances, such as motors and microwave ovens only produce full output with pure sine wave power.  Audio equipment, satellite systems, and video equipment will run properly using pure sine wave inverters.

#2. Modified Sine Wave

A modified sine wave power has a waveform more like a square wave, but with an extra step. Using a more basic form of technology than pure sine wave inverters, they produce power which is perfectly adequate for powering basic electronics.

A modified sine wave inverter works fine with most equipment, although the efficiency or power of the material will reduce over some time. Use modified sine wave inverters to provide power for less sensitive appliances like phone chargers, heaters, and air conditioners. Appliances with electronic timers or digital clocks will often not operate correctly. Many appliances get their timing from the peak of the line power – basically, the modified sine has a flat top rather than a peak – this may cause the occasional double trigger. Because the modified sine wave is noisier and rougher than a pure sine wave, clocks, timers, radios and power drills may run faster or not work at all.

How to Determine Which Power Source is Right for You?

To answer that question, you need to consider how you want to use your inverter. The more complex and sensitive your appliances and equipment are, the more likely you will need a Pure Sine Wave inverter. If on the other hand your power demand is simple, and you have no plans of acquiring today’s sensitive electronic devices then the Modified Sine Wave inverter is a better choice. Still in doubt?
